Party Poker Tournaments - Tournament Opportunities at Party Poker

Tournaments provide a different angle on playing poker because they require even more skills than ring games do. For new and seasoned players, the variations of extended play, player elimination and working up to the final table is a thrill that hooks many players onto regular tournament participation. Party Poker offers huge tournaments with guaranteed prize pools or specialty large jackpots that are more than enough to entice every level of player.

Tournament Basics

In tournament play, every participant registers for a slot and pays a certain entry fee in addition to the buy-in. The buy-in amounts go into the prize pool. The entry fee goes to the house, in this case Party Poker, who in turn gives each player a designated amount of chips. Every tournament player starts with the same amount of chips. Through each round, players are eliminated from each table and the player pool narrows until the final table. At the end, the player with all the chips wins. Typically, large scale tournaments pay tiered percentages of the total winnings to the top several places.

To begin the play, each player at the table receives a card. The player with the highest card becomes the dealer first. Then the deal rotates according to standard rules. The overall goal in a tournament is to gain chips. Whether you win a lot hands or not is less crucial. Once you're out of chips, you're out of the tourney. The way to stay in is to keep collecting more and more chips. Live and online tournaments both teach players to think about long-term goals such as winning the whole event instead of the immediate pot on the table in front of you. Tournament play helps poker players gain a wider perspective.

Regular Daily Scheduled Tournaments

Party Poker offers a full list of daily scheduled tournaments. First, a whole selection of No Limit Texas Hold'em Guaranteed tournaments are offered every day. These Hold'em tournaments start several times every hour from 7:00 to 22:30 at buy-ins ranging from $1 to over $100. Two to eighteen party points are awarded to players at the levels matching the tournament entry fees. These Hold'em tournaments are both speed and regular variation tournaments, including speed rebuys and regular rebuys.

In addition to these guaranteed tournaments, another full selection of Limit, No Limit and Pot Limit tournaments are offered for Texas Hold'em, Omaha Hold'em Hi, Omaha Hi/Lo and Seven Card Stud. These are standard tournaments with variable prize pools in both speed and regular play versions. These tournaments also run daily, with start times at 15 to 30 minute intervals every hour.

Because these tournaments have fixed starting times, both of these sets of tournaments require players to register in advance. Signing up at least 60 minutes before the start of the tournament will secure most players a place in that tournament, but the lobby will announce when registration for each particular tournament closes. When a player selects a particular tournament from the players' lobby, the seats available will be listed. If the registration has closed, the lobby will not allow a player to register for that tournament.

Types of Tournaments at Party Poker

Guaranteed Prize Pools (GTD Tournaments)

Since typically in tournaments the total prize pool is determined by the amount of buy-ins, the pool total varies depending on the number of participants. Guaranteed tournaments however, offer a specific prize pool amount. It may be adequately filled by the total number of participants in the tournament, but if necessary, the card room will fill in to reach the posted total. This offers players a particular goal for their tournament play.

Sit'N'Go Tournaments

Opposite the scheduled tournaments, Sit'N'Go tournaments are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. These don't require advance registration. Players select an open Sit'N'Go and as soon as all the player seats at that table are filled, the Sit'N'Go will begin. Sit'N'Gos are single table tournaments that offer players a more immediate and faster form of tournament play.

Freeroll Tournaments

Freerolls are a special form of tournament. The rules of standard poker still apply, but the pieces that are most affected are the entries. Freerolls don't have required entry fees for players. However, they still pay out cash prizes or cash value prizes like entries to larger tournament events. They are a great bankroll building experience for players.

Specialty Tournaments

Party Poker also offers specialty tournaments each week and month. These include:

  • New Depositor $1.5K freerolls
  • Daily freerolls
  • Bad Beat Jackpot
  • $300K Guaranteed Sundays
  • Monthly Millions

Promotional tournaments run for extended periods of time, but are subject to change at the discretion of Party Poker.

Whatever your favorite type of tournament, Party Poker gives players hundreds of daily, weekly and monthly options for both small and large poker tournaments. Fast-paced speed play tourneys, extended regular play single-table Sit'N'Gos or 5000-player standard elimination formats all offer players the chance to win big and become tournament champions.
