Poker Sites with Most Fish

Page summary: In poker, a fish is a player who donates money to the games - either by inexperience of bad play. This is one of several terms for the same type of player. You’ll also hear them referred to as ‘donk’, ‘donator’ or just plain ‘weak’. Part of the skills of any good player is to find easy games. It follows that poker games full of fish are ideal for making profits.

This page explains how to find the poker sites with the most fish – and how to locate the best games once you log on. First, I have explained how the generic term ‘fish’ can be broken down into several different types of player – not all fish are equal!

Fishy Poker Sites – The Different Types of Fish You Will Find Online

There are several ways to donate money to a poker game. As you gain experience you will notice that fish come in many varieties. The main ways to categorize them involve how loose (or tight) they play, and how aggressively – I also like to rate fish on how tricky they think that they are.

Loose Fish: The classic image of a poker fish is someone who plays too many hands. Limping into a lot of pots from all positions at the table, and calling raises in spots where this does not make mathematical sense. These same players often have the tendency to go too far with their hands after the flop – calling bets when it is obvious to more experienced players that they have no chance of winning the pot.

Tight Fish: Playing too few hands is also the hallmark of a bad opponent. Players who wait for premium hands often think that they are playing smart. What they fail to realize is that their opponents often know exactly what they are doing. Since they know that a player that ‘waits for aces’ will be reluctant to fold them post flop, hands like small pairs and suited connectors become valuable. Tight fish often complain that they are always getting their premium hands beaten. The reason is that they are effectively playing them face-up.

Passive Fish: You can’t win at poker long term if you always show down the best hand. Aggressive players win pots when their opponents miss the flop. Overly passive players give up control of pots by calling a lot and rarely raising. When a passive player does raise, everyone knows that their hand is super-strong – meaning it is easy to read passive fish opponents.

Aggressive Fish: Some players are just too crazy, making bets and raises with questionable holdings. This can have benefits; nobody will believe the fish when they do wake up with aces. Loose and aggressive play is profitable in the hands of skilled players. When novice players adopt this style, they will give away their money very quickly. The defense is simple, wait for a strong hand and let the aggressive-fish bluff off their stack trying to make you fold.

Tricky Fish: Deception is an important component of poker. I have reserved this category for a special kind of fish – one who effectively plays ‘backwards’. This player will make big bets when weak (and sometimes show you their bluff after you fold) and slow-play with big hands. Next time you spot an opponent that raises a lot and then limps with aces you have probably spotted a tricky fish. Next time they raise you can eliminate premium hands from their range. Building big pots when weak and playing small ones when strong is not a profitable strategy – however ‘cool’ these types of fish think their deception is!

Of course, these are just broad categories – specific fish will have a mixture of two or more of them (tight / passive for example).

How to Spot Fish Online

If you are playing cash games, then the lobby of your poker site should give you the information you need to find games with fish. There are two main scores to look out for. These are the number of players seeing each flop, and the average pot size. If you see one or two games where the pot size is much bigger than the rest – or you are getting 4+ players to each flop, then you have probably found a profitable game.

You can also take notes and / or color code your opponents at many sites. If you actively mark the fish each time you play it will not be long before you have enough notes to find and target these players when you log on. Since their bankrolls do not last too long, you will have to keep up with your note taking!

What Kind of Sites Have Fish

Certain types of online poker sites have more casual players than others. In fact, the biggest poker site of all – PokerStars.com – is the home of a lot of small stakes ‘pro grinders’, who make it their job to multi-table and wait for fish to donate their bankrolls.

An ideal poker site is one attached to a big sports betting or casino brand. People place bets, and many come over to the poker room to check out the action. These are less likely to be the experienced players you’ll find at dedicated poker-only sites.

In the US, BetOnline fit this description perfectly. This Panama based sports betting giant has a poker room on the Chico Network. The constant cross-over traffic keeps the games easy.

Worldwide, the iPoker Network is a poker site which pools the players from many of the biggest sports betting sites from the UK and Europe – creating easy games. The big brand site 888 Poker is also known for the number of recreational players in the games.

Final Thoughts

In poker, being a fish is relative. A brand-new player would be a fish in a micro-limits game – though a player who crushed the micros would usually be a fish in $1 / $2. There are profitable games (and fish!) at all levels, you’ll need to master the finer points of poker strategy before you learn to spot, and beat them.
