Tablet Poker Sites

Page summary: Tablets including Android, Apple and (to a lesser extent) Windows 10 devices have become a standard way to access online poker sites. All these years after the first tablets were created, a lot of those sites are still playing catch-up when it comes to the quality of their platforms. This page looks in detail at the different options available for tablet using online poker fans.

First below I have looked at the general pros and cons of playing poker on your tablet – as opposed to going the traditional desktop route. After that the 2 different ways of accessing sites from tablets is covered. The specific sites which have tablet poker platforms which stand out are listed at the end of this page.

Pros and Cons of Tablet Poker Sites

Poker grew up on desktop devices, and even though mobile poker is now very popular – there is still a gap in quality between desktop and mobile platforms. One of the key areas to consider is the ability to play several tables at once. On a desktop (depending on your site) scaling up from 2 games to 4, 8 or even more is no problem at all. The main factor is whether you can keep up, not whether the technology can handle your games.

On tablets, this is not so easy. There are apps which allow multi-tabling (PokerStars’ tablet apps are the best example), though you are restricted to 4 games and will not be able to enjoy the tables ‘popping out’ when you have an action. Instead there is a tabbed interface which lights up.

For more recreational players who enjoy just one or two games at a times, this is obviously less of an issue.

The main advantage of tablet poker sites is that you are free to move around while you play. For some people this can mean enjoying a game of poker in front of the TV with your family – rather than isolated in your study.

How to Access Tablet Poker Sites

Some players are surprised at how few of the poker sites supply apps – for either Android or iOS (Apple) tablets. There are some very good apps available, though the more common method of accessing the games is via your bowser window. In theory, browser games have the advantage of being device-agnostic. One practical consideration is that poker sites which work using Flash will not run on iPads. Apple stopped supporting Flash several years ago. You can play browser poker sites in your iPad, either with a plug-in or via a poker site which supports the newer HTML5 platform.

The advantage of Browser-based games is that you can access the games from anywhere without needing to go through a lengthy download / update cycle. The advantage of downloading apps is that these platforms are more stable – and you’ll have better (though still somewhat limited) multi-tabling options that way.

When you first play poker on your tablet make sure that you spend some time getting used to the layout and controls before you play for higher stakes. The bet-sliders in particular are more difficult to use with a touch screen device than on a desktop. It is no fun to be struggling to get the right bet size in-game, making a couple of practice sessions a good idea.

What Poker Games Work Best on Tablets?

With any mobile device, a game which you can join for a short period is ideal. If you prefer a longer multi-table tournament session, then I recommend using your desktop or laptop instead. There are several games which are ideal for short sessions. These include regular cash games, fast-fold poker games and the newer lottery sit n go format. Make sure that your poker site offers a good selection of these before you play.

Which Are the Best Tablet Poker Sites?

Which poker sites are best for iPad or Android / Windows tablet users depends on your location. Unfortunately, the US friendly offshore sites have not developed apps (or much in the way of browser poker games). Only Ignition Poker, which took over the famous Bovada poker room, offers a good mobile option. This is browser based and will work with all platforms including iOS. You can enjoy Ignition Poker’s fast-fold variation here – called Zone Poker – as well as their regular cash games.

Outside of the US there is a much bigger choice – and you’ll also find sites which offer apps for both iOS and Android tablets. There are 2 apps which I believe are leading the field, one from PokerStars and the other from 888 Poker. You might also want to check out the mobile poker offering from Unibet and Party Poker.
